Montreal’s Moroccan-Canadian community is coming together in sorrow and anxiety following a devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of over 2,000 individuals in their North African homeland.
The proprietor of Café Amistad in Montreal reports that his clientele comprises Moroccans from various regions, and all of them have been deeply affected by this calamity. Chorfi Zouhir notes that many have spent the past day attempting to contact their relatives, anxiously awaiting news of their well-being.
While Zouhir’s own family in Casablanca is safe, he remains profoundly stunned by the tragic events that have befallen his homeland.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has conveyed his sympathies to the Moroccan people through a social media message, affirming Canada’s willingness to provide assistance in any way possible.
Global Affairs Canada disclosed on Saturday that it had no information regarding Canadian citizens being harmed or perishing in the earthquake and had no updates to offer as of this morning.
