You are now able to verbally communicate with ChatGPT and listen to the responses generated by this AI-powered chatbot.
OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, recently unveiled a set of new features, one of which allows users to participate in a spoken dialogue with ChatGPT.
In a blog post published on Monday, OpenAI provided a glimpse of how this innovative feature can be utilized, such as requesting a bedtime story for your family or resolving a debate at the dinner table.
The recently introduced voice features by OpenAI bear resemblances to the capabilities offered by voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri.
In a demonstration of this new update shared by OpenAI, a user requests ChatGPT to craft a story involving “the super-duper sunflower hedgehog named Larry.” Impressively, the chatbot can audibly narrate the story with a voice that sounds human and also respond to inquiries such as, “What was his house like?” and “Who is his best friend?”
OpenAI explained that ChatGPT’s voice functionality is made possible by a novel text-to-speech model, which can generate lifelike audio solely from text and a brief sample of spoken words. The company also mentioned its collaboration with professional voice actors to create five distinct voices that can be used to give life to the chatbot.
OpenAI has announced another new feature on Monday, which enables the chatbot to respond to prompts containing images. For instance, you can take a photo of the contents of your refrigerator and ask ChatGPT to help you devise a meal plan using the available ingredients. Furthermore, the company mentioned that you can request the chatbot to focus on specific parts of an image using its “drawing tool” within the app.
These new features will become available in the app over the next two weeks for subscribers of ChatGPT’s Plus and Enterprise services. The Plus subscription is priced at $20 per month, and the Enterprise service is presently exclusive to business clients.
OpenAI’s updates arrive in the context of an ongoing AI competition in the tech industry, initially triggered by the public launch of ChatGPT late last year. In recent weeks, major tech companies have been racing to introduce new updates that incorporate more AI-powered tools directly into their core products. Google, for instance, recently announced a series of updates to its ChatGPT rival, Bard. Additionally, Amazon revealed its plans to bring a generative AI-powered update to its Alexa voice assistant.
