War has harmed 17,962 civilians, including 1,196 children, according to Rosemary DiCarlo, who spoke to the UN Security Council.
The UN reported on Monday that a total of 9,806 people, including 560 children, have died as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, 17,962 civilian injuries, including 1,196 minors, have been confirmed by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
“The actual figures are very likely considerably higher and, tragically, will continue to rise if current patterns continue,” she said.
“Combined with Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Initiative, such attacks not only destroy the livelihoods of Ukrainian farmers, but also risk impacting the lives of millions of food insecure people around the world,” she added.
According to DiCarlo, the UN is “concerned” about the uptick in attacks on the energy infrastructure in Ukraine in recent weeks.
“In recent weeks, the war’s effects in the Black Sea have grown, as seen by reports of the widespread use of sea mines that pose a risk to civilian navigation. Whether deliberate or unintentional, a military incident in the Black Sea may further destabilize the area, the expert warned.
“We, therefore, reiterate our call for restraint in order to avoid any action that could worsen the already volatile situation.”
