Trump Contacts Bezos as Amazon Denies Plans to Reflect Tariff Hikes in Prices.

U.S. President Donald Trump contacted Amazon founder Jeff Bezos following reports that Amazon intended to inform customers about the cost of trade tariffs.

The company had reviewed the possibility of breaking down tariff costs on Amazon Haul—a budget-focused site launched last year to compete with Shein and Temu—but clarified that it ultimately chose not to proceed, and the idea was never under review for Amazon’s main platform.

The White House’s sharp response suggests growing pressure over its latest import tax policies, which experts warn could raise consumer prices and heighten recession risks. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, during a press briefing marking Trump’s first 100 days back in office, said she and the president discussed the report and claimed it highlighted “why Americans should support American-made goods.”

Labeling Amazon’s reported move as politically motivated, Leavitt questioned why similar steps weren’t taken during the Biden administration, which she blamed for record inflation levels.

Since resuming office in January, Trump has increased tariffs, saying they’ll help boost domestic manufacturing and raise tax revenue. Even after scaling back some proposals, imports from countries like China now face new duties—some as high as 145%.

These tariff hikes have led to decreased U.S.-China trade and concerns over product shortages, including goods such as baby strollers and umbrellas. Retailers like Shein and Temu, which rely on direct shipping from Chinese factories, have already raised prices in response.

Analysts estimate that Chinese merchants make up about half of Amazon’s U.S. marketplace sellers.

Punchbowl News first reported Amazon’s internal discussions about itemizing tariff costs. Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle confirmed the idea had been considered only for Amazon Haul and stated it was never approved.

A source involved said the talks were prompted by the removal of tariff exemptions on Chinese shipments under $800, not by political backlash.

Trump, when asked about the call with Bezos, said the Amazon founder had “solved the problem” and praised him for acting swiftly.

“Jeff Bezos was great. He handled it quickly and did the right thing,” Trump said.

Amazon was a contributor to Trump’s inauguration, and Bezos had a place of honor at the event. While the two have clashed in the past—with Trump criticizing Amazon and the Washington Post, and Bezos accusing Trump of undermining democracy—the call suggests a rare moment of cooperation.

In 2019, Amazon sued the Pentagon, claiming Trump influenced the denial of a $10 billion contract to retaliate against Bezos, whom he viewed as a political adversary.
