Nick Clegg Departs Meta as Donald Trump Prepares to Reassume the U.S. Presidency.

Sir Nick, seen here with Mark Zuckerberg, is stepping down from Meta as Silicon Valley leaders work to gain favor with Donald Trump.

Sir Nick Clegg, former UK deputy prime minister and Liberal Democrat leader, has announced his resignation as Meta’s president of global affairs after nearly seven years with the company.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, he shared plans to spend a few months transitioning his responsibilities to Joel Kaplan, his deputy and a former senior figure in George W. Bush’s administration, before pursuing “new adventures.”

Sir Nick’s departure aligns with Donald Trump’s imminent return to the White House. Trump’s relationship with Meta has been contentious, especially after Facebook and Instagram suspended his accounts in 2021 over his comments about the Capitol riots. Recently, tensions have softened, with Mark Zuckerberg dining with Trump and donating to his inauguration fund.

Joining Meta in 2018 after losing his parliamentary seat, Sir Nick played a key role in shaping the company’s oversight board, addressing content moderation and privacy policies.

In his farewell, he expressed gratitude for his time bridging the divide between technology and politics, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of the tech landscape. Kaplan will now take over as Meta’s chief global affairs officer.
