A young man from the Borders, Marc Edwards, has gained attention as a sought-after filmmaker after creating AI-generated videos to impress his grandparents. By using advanced artificial intelligence tools, the marketing officer transformed old photos of Jedburgh into dynamic video montages. His grandparents, George and Isobel, were thrilled—along with the local community—prompting him to produce similar films for nearby towns like Kelso and Galashiels. His creations are now being used in school history classes and social events for the elderly.

Just days after sharing his videos online, Marc Edwards received overwhelming support, with his work amassing tens of thousands of views, shares, and likes. His AI-driven montages, showcasing street scenes from as early as the late 1800s, have now become part of history lessons in local schools. Marc is also receiving daily requests from other communities and sports clubs across the Borders. He shared that the response has been incredible, with teachers noting how the videos are enhancing students’ understanding of local history. Committed to continuing the project, Marc expressed his amazement at AI’s potential and his gratitude for the positive impact his work has made.

Marc’s videos have also gained strong popularity among elderly communities. At the OPAL (Older People Active Lives) project in Galashiels, over 20 seniors gathered to view his historical montages. Galashiels residents Ann and Monica were especially moved by the experience. Monica recalled seeing the old railway station, sharing a memory of meeting her father there after his return from Dunkirk. Ann reflected on how much the town had changed and expressed her delight at seeing the old buildings again, noting she had never experienced anything quite like it before.

Despite receiving widespread praise, Marc’s most enthusiastic supporters remain his grandparents, Isobel and George Somerville. George expressed his amazement at Marc’s work, saying they were both deeply impressed when they first saw the videos. While he admitted he doesn’t fully grasp how the animations are created, he enjoys watching them and values the way they bring back memories of how their towns once looked.
