The originator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has joined up with G42, the Abu Dhabi-based digital conglomerate announced on Wednesday, in an effort to promote the use of artificial intelligence in the United Arab Emirates and other Middle Eastern markets.
The Abu Dhabi-based company G42 said that it would use generative AI models from OpenAI in a variety of industries, including finance, energy, healthcare, and public services.
The agreement, whose financial details were kept confidential, is one of several steps being taken to advance the UAE’s technology sector.
Requests for comment from Reuters were not immediately answered by the companies.
In the UAE, G42, which is supported by Mubadala, has been at the vanguard of AI adoption. In July, the company announced that it had worked with American AI company Cerebras Systems to create the largest supercomputer for AI training.
In May, the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) in Abu Dhabi released its Falcom 40B large language model (LLM) as an open source project for both academic and industrial use.
G42 said that it would integrate Azure data centers into its AI architecture to increase regional adoption.
As part of his “world tour” of AI, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had stopped in Abu Dhabi in June. There, he promoted the idea of having international organizations oversee AI development.
