Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has stirred speculation by changing his name to “Kekius Maximus” on X, his social media platform. The tech mogul, who is a close ally of US President-Elect Donald Trump, offered no immediate explanation for the name change or his new profile picture, which features Pepe the Frog — a meme associated with far-right groups.
This move has had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency world, causing the value of a memecoin (a digital currency based on internet memes) with the same name to surge. While Musk has previously influenced crypto prices through his social media posts, it remains unclear whether he has any direct involvement with this particular memecoin.
The name “Kekius” seems to be a Latinized version of “kek,” a term initially popularized by gamers to mean “laugh out loud,” but now often linked to the alt-right. “Kek” also refers to the ancient Egyptian god of darkness, sometimes depicted with a frog’s head. The name “Maximus” likely references the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, portrayed by Russell Crowe in the film Gladiator. Musk’s new profile picture shows Pepe dressed in Roman military attire, holding what appears to be a game console.
