Feeling overwhelmed by online shopping? A robot might offer a solution.
The popular ChatGPT bot is expanding its abilities by introducing shopping features, stepping into a space traditionally led by platforms like Amazon, Google, and various media sites.
The update will let users easily view prices, read reviews, and access direct links to buy products based on personalised recommendations.
OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, emphasised that product choices are made independently and are not paid advertisements. Since launching its search tool last year, OpenAI reported it has become one of its most popular features, generating over a billion web searches just last week.
Despite Google still commanding around 89% of global search traffic, analysts note its market share has been gradually declining.
By adding shopping capabilities, OpenAI is moving into closer competition not only with Google but also with review-driven platforms like the New York Times and other publishers.
Amazon launched its own AI shopping assistant last year, while Perplexity AI also offers a shopping-focused tool.
OpenAI stated that the goal of the update is to help users “find, compare, and purchase products more quickly”. The feature will be available to all users, though full rollout may take a few days.
This shopping addition is part of a broader upgrade to OpenAI’s search service, which also now includes live sports scores and multiple citations in responses.
