The proposed “Voice” referendum isn’t merely about recognition; it could bring the most significant change to our Constitution ever. Here are the reasons why voting “No” is essential:
- Legally Risky: The proposal is an unprecedented leap into the unknown. Legal experts, like former High Court Judge Ian Callinan AC KC, anticipate years of litigation arising from it.
- Lack of Details: Australians are asked to make a massive decision without all the details. Key specifics on the operation of the Voice are unknown. We should never sign a blank cheque.
- Divisiveness: Incorporating a body exclusively for one group can create division. Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, a Warlpiri woman, says, “This Voice will not unite us, it will divide us by race.”
- Ineffectual: More bureaucracy isn’t the answer to helping Indigenous Australians in disadvantaged communities. We need action, not just words.
- Unbounded Scope: The Voice covers all areas of “Executive Government”. Decisions on the economy, national security, health, and more would fall within its purview.
- Potential Delays: With its broad scope, this Voice may lead to legal challenges and delays in governmental decisions.
- Activists’ Gateway: Some advocates see this Voice as a stepping stone towards more radical changes, including the abolishment of long-standing institutions.
- Expensive Bureaucracy: While the exact costs are unknown, they would be in addition to current Indigenous representative bodies.
- Permanency: Once instated, the Voice becomes irreversible. We cannot afford the permanent repercussions of an ill-considered decision.
- Better Alternatives Exist: Recognition can be achieved without tying it to this risky proposal.
With so much at stake, every Australian should make an informed decision. If you’re unsure about the consequences of this referendum, follow a simple principle: If you don’t know, vote no.
