AI Presents a Transformative Opportunity for Schools.

A group of teachers explored AI’s role in classrooms during an event in Stoke-on-Trent, organized by the Good Future Foundation and hosted at Belgrave St Bartholomew’s Academy. Stoke-on-Trent South MP Allison Gardner also attended.

Over 40 teachers participated in the full-day session, discussing AI’s potential benefits in education and the challenges it may bring. Labour MP Gardner emphasized that the government sees AI as a major opportunity for the country, offering significant advantages for teachers.

The foundation noted that just over a quarter of teachers feel confident using AI and announced plans to expand training sessions nationwide. Executive Director Daniel Emmerson highlighted the importance of equipping educators with the necessary support to integrate AI effectively, ensuring students are prepared for an AI-driven future.

During the event, teachers developed practical AI applications for their schools, such as improving communication with families who speak English as an additional language and utilizing chatbots to enhance parental access to school resources.

‘Generational Opportunity’

Labour MP Gardner praised St Bartholomew’s for integrating AI into teaching, emphasizing the importance of local students leading the way in leveraging this technology for a strong start in life.

Daniel Drakeley, deputy head teacher at St Paul’s C of E Primary in Stoke-on-Trent, noted that he and many teachers were already using AI in classrooms. He stressed the need to balance technological advancements with student safety.

“It was reassuring to connect with other teachers facing similar challenges,” he said.

Belgrave St Bartholomew’s principal, George Barlow, highlighted that embracing innovation is central to their teaching approach.

“By equipping students with the right skills and education, we can ensure they are prepared to seize future opportunities,” he added.
