An NHS trust is aiming to enhance its support for chronic respiratory patients in Hull and East Yorkshire by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its care system.
The Lenus COPD app enables patients to monitor their symptoms and communicate directly with NHS clinics. Since its introduction in March 2023, the system has reduced hospital readmissions by 40%. The Humber Health Partnership now hopes AI can further cut hospital visits, potentially by up to 90%, by analyzing patient data to detect trends and triggers requiring intervention.
According to Professor Mike Crooks, the app prompts patients to report their well-being, enabling early intervention and care before hospital treatment becomes necessary.
For patients like Ruth, diagnosed with COPD at 14, the app has nearly eliminated hospital visits, offering a reliable way to contact clinicians when needed.
This AI-driven approach is expected to help healthcare professionals provide timely support and improve patient outcomes.
