The Biden Administration is Concerned About a Possible Iranian Attack and is Collaborating with Israel on Defense Measures, According to a U.S. Official.

President Joe Biden arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, on September 29, 2024, before boarding Air Force One to head back to Washington.

The Biden administration is concerned that Iran may be planning an attack after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. They are now working with Israel on defensive measures, a U.S. official said on Sunday.

Joint defenses are being put in place, including changes to the U.S. military’s position in the region. The Biden administration had previously led a multinational defense effort in April when Iran fired over 300 drones and missiles at Israel after Israeli airstrikes killed senior Iranian officers in Syria.

The U.S. official did not provide details about the potential Iranian attack or specific military moves being made. Concerns about a wider regional conflict have risen as Israel ramps up its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the group, backed by Iran, continues its fight despite the loss of many top commanders.

The Pentagon warned that if Iran or its allies target American personnel or interests in the region, the U.S. will take action to defend its people. Defense Department spokesman Gen. Patrick Ryder mentioned the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group as part of U.S. capabilities in the area.

Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli bombing in southern Beirut on Friday. His death is a significant blow to Hezbollah and Iran’s influence in the Middle East.

The Biden administration is also defending its failed attempt to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The agreement, backed by 11 other nations, was announced last week but quickly collapsed when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear that Israel would continue its offensive against Hezbollah.

U.S. officials claimed that Israel initially supported the ceasefire, but changed its stance when an opportunity arose to target Nasrallah. Despite the setback, the White House maintains that diplomatic efforts to bring stability to the region are still ongoing. National Security spokesman John Kirby emphasized the importance of de-escalation and the need for a diplomatic solution to prevent an all-out war with Hezbollah or Iran.
