Apple is anticipated to unveil the first generative AI iPhone at its event on September 9.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc., speaks during the iPhone 15 launch event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, on September 12, 2023.

Apple has announced its next major event on Monday, September 9, where the iPhone 16 is anticipated to be launched. The event, themed “It’s Glowtime,” will be held at 10 am PT at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park and will be streamed online.

While the meaning of “glowtime” remains unclear, the iPhone 16 is expected to prominently feature embedded artificial intelligence. At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the company introduced new generative AI tools, including “Apple Intelligence” features like personalized Genmoji and a more advanced Siri capable of answering detailed queries about schedules, emails, and flight times.

Although some AI features may be available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 is anticipated to be the first model fully designed with AI integration in mind. Apple also announced a collaboration with OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, at the conference. This partnership may enhance Siri’s capabilities, potentially enabling it to recall past images, provide detailed information, and learn user preferences over time.

However, CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino suggests that the introduction of AI features will be gradual, with some enhancements, such as improved Siri functions, possibly extending into 2025. This evolution might not significantly impact iPhone sales cycles but could gradually influence user interaction and personalization.

Apple’s move into generative AI aims to improve features like Live Text and autocorrect, and may redefine iPhone functionality. The new iPhone’s pricing remains uncertain, with speculation that AI features might lead to higher costs. Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung, have also begun integrating generative AI, including features like “circle to search” for quick information retrieval.
