Michelle ThompsonThe U.S. Secret Service is urgently bolstering security ahead of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since last week’s attempted assassination, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Security measures for Trump’s upcoming rallies and events are being thoroughly reevaluated, including decisions on whether to hold them indoors or in more secure outdoor locations. Following the near-assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, outdoor events may be significantly restricted or potentially eliminated.
The heightened security comes after a review of the shooting incident, which has raised concerns about potential copycat attacks and inspired threats. For this weekend’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, both the Secret Service and local law enforcement have increased their presence, with local agencies contributing additional officers.
Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir mentioned a “last-minute request” from the Secret Service for 50 to 60 officers to assist with security for the rally, noting that the Secret Service is leading the security planning.
Recent days have seen significant changes in security protocols, including increased vigilance by local law enforcement, such as a New Jersey helicopter tracking Trump’s plane until his arrival at Newark airport. Additionally, new road closures around Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence have been implemented by the Palm Beach Police Department, effective 24/7 until the November 2024 election.
The shooting has prompted plans for numerous security exercises involving local and federal agencies, which had been reduced since the Covid-19 pandemic. These exercises aim to address security gaps and improve coordination.
Saturday’s rally in Grand Rapids, which will be the first official campaign event featuring both Trump and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, will see the Secret Service handling the security arrangements, with state police ready to assist as needed.
