‘We have urged Israeli authorities to examine this event on an urgent basis,’ the State Department spokeswoman tells Anadolu.
The United States is “devastated” by the “heartbreaking” death of a 6-year-old child in Gaza and has urged for an immediate investigation into the event, according to a State Department official.
“We are devastated about the reports of the death of 6-year-old Hind Rajab,” a State Department spokeswoman told Anadolu on condition of anonymity. “Far too many civilians have died in this fight. Every civilian death during this battle is tragic. The death of a child is especially painful.
The spokesperson cited previous US calls on Israel to “take all possible precautions to prevent civilian harm,” protect humanitarian staff, and investigate credible allegations of law of war violations and human rights abuses, saying the US has asked Israeli authorities to “investigate this incident on an urgent basis.””
“We understand the Israeli government is doing so,” the official explained. “We expect to see the findings as soon as they are ready, including any appropriate accountability measures that will be taken.”
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Rajab was trapped in her family car as it came under fire from the Israeli army in Gaza City and was discovered dead after over two weeks of uncertainty.
In a Friday statement, the relief organization stated the child’s body and two of its paramedics, Youssef Zeino and Ahmed Al-Madhoon, who went out on a mission to save the little girl, had been discovered.
Hind was fleeing fighting in northern Gaza in a car with her family, including 15-year-old cousin Layan Hamadeh, when they were shot at by Israelis, according to the Red Crescent.
Surrounded by the bodies of relatives, they asked for assistance, and a Red Crescent ambulance was despatched.
According to the humanitarian organization, Layan was killed while conversing with a Red Crescent crew over the phone while shooting could be heard in the background.
When the team called back, Hind replied, possibly the sole survivor in the automobile. Soon later, they lost contact with the youngster.
