Videos of world-renowned actors reading aloud the claims against Israel over the alleged “genocide” in Gaza during the inaugural hearing of South Africa’s lawsuit filed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have received thousands of views on social media.
The 29 actors featured in videos broadcast on the YouTube account The Palestine Festival of Literature included Khalid Abdalla and Tobias Menzies from the TV series The Crown, as well as Charles Dance, Carice van Houten, and Lena Headey from the TV series Game of Thrones.
In addition, Israeli-born actor Adam Bakri, Jewish actor Wallace Shawn, and Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, who participated in the hunger strike demanding a cease-fire in Gaza in front of the White House, appeared in front of the camera and read out the accusations.
Susan Sarandon, an Oscar-winning actress from the 1995 film Dead Man Walking, Murder on the Orient Express actor Paapa Essiedu, and Jewish actor Wallace Shawn, famed for playing Rex in the Toy Story franchise, were all included in the released videos.
The cast includes Gbenga Akinnagbe, recognized for his roles in The Wire and The Deuce, as well as Sepideh Moafi, who appeared in The Deuce.
Israel is currently facing a “genocide” case brought to the UN court by South Africa as a result of its attacks on Gaza, which the UN has repeatedly recognized as a violation of international law. Tel Aviv, on the other hand, dismisses allegations of genocide, arguing that it is merely trying to defend its own citizens.
Israel has unleashed a continuous military assault on Gaza following Hamas’ cross-border incursion on October 7, which Tel Aviv claims killed about 1,200 people.
According to Palestinian sources, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 24,448 Palestinians and injured 61,504. The vast majority of the victims were women and children.
According to the UN, 85% of Gaza’s population is already internally displaced due to severe shortages of food, potable water, and medication.
